This was on the back cover of a Teaching for Justice magazine my mother sent me. My mother was a teacher, and is an advocate for justice. She has always given herself to people who struggle with adversity on a daily basis in their lives. She has alway given respect to people because they are human beings. That is all.

Sometimes, I get sad, (I am thinking.) Talking to my sister on the phone I tell her my thoughts. She tells me to make my mantra "I am a happy and joyful soul".
It comes from realizing that people who have come, and gone, and still remain in my life have changed. And maybe I've changed. When we go and visit old friends, we see that they've gone the opposite direction of us. Terrifyingly, they've been swept by that dark and dangerous current that we saw coming and bailed out of just in time. How did we make it, and they didn't? Weren't we the same, didn't we used to laugh at the same things, pass moments, hours and days with each other, never imagining anything without them? It's the way we see people, and the way we treat people now that's changed. It's the fear. Fear has overshadowed the love, and it's tangible, almost visible. These meanderings in the wake of a global pandemic. |
